Horizontal Wave Force Sensor

Sensor designed to measure and record horizontal wave force acting on a diaphragm at different locations in a wave flume, with applications in hydrodynamic and coastal engineering studies.
The Horizontal Wave Force Sensor is designed to sense and record the horizontal wave force generated by wave action in a wave flume. The sensor measures force acting on its diaphragm while minimizing the influence of vertical hydrostatic pressure. Multiple sensors can be used at different distances from the wave direction to record changes in horizontal wave force as waves propagate through the flume. The resulting information can be used to estimate forces acting on objects in wave flumes and relate the results to coastal and offshore structures.

Overview

The Horizontal Wave Force Sensor is designed to measure and record the
horizontal force generated by wave action at different locations within
a water body. It is particularly suitable for experimental measurements
in wave flumes and hydrodynamic model studies.

The sensor measures the force acting on its diaphragm while the sensor
arrangement is designed to minimize the influence of vertical hydrostatic
pressure. This allows the horizontal component of wave-induced force to
be recorded for further analysis.

Key Features

  • Designed for horizontal wave force measurement
  • Measures wave-induced force directly on the sensor diaphragm
  • Designed to minimize the effect of vertical hydrostatic pressure
  • Suitable for wave flume experiments
  • Multiple sensors can be used at different locations
  • Records changes in horizontal wave force along the wave direction
  • Suitable for hydrodynamic model studies
  • Standard 15-metre cable
  • Provision for further cable extension

Measurement Principle

The sensor uses a diaphragm exposed to wave action to measure the horizontal
force generated by the movement of water. The sensor is positioned so that
the measured force represents the horizontal component of wave-induced force,
while the effect of vertical hydrostatic pressure is minimized.

Applications

  • Wave flume experiments
  • Hydrodynamic model studies
  • Wave force measurements
  • Coastal engineering research
  • Offshore engineering research
  • Experimental studies of wave-induced forces
  • Estimation of forces acting on objects in wave flumes

Wave Force Measurement

The sensor is used to sense and record the horizontal wave force acting on
the sensor diaphragm. The exposed area of the sensor is approximately
9 sq. cm. and is positioned in the wave flume for measuring the force
generated by wave action.

The measured horizontal force is separated from the vertical hydrostatic
pressure through the sensor arrangement. Multiple sensors can be positioned
at different distances along the direction of wave propagation to observe
the decrease or variation in horizontal wave force as waves travel through
the wave flume.

Experimental Applications

The information obtained from the horizontal wave force measurements can
be used to estimate the force acting on objects in a wave flume. The results
can also provide information that can be extrapolated to actual objects
and structures in coastal and offshore areas.

Sensor Positioning

Several sensors can be positioned at different locations along the direction
of wave travel. This arrangement allows researchers to record the horizontal
wave force at different distances and study how the force changes as the
wave propagates through the experimental setup.

Cable Configuration

  • Standard Cable Length: 15 metres
  • Cable Extension: Provision to extend further as required

Wave Force Recording

The sensor can be incorporated into a wave force recording arrangement for
experimental studies. The recorded measurements provide basic information
for evaluating wave forces acting on objects and structures subjected to
wave action.

Monitor up to 32 sensor channels simultaneously, with real-time recording, graphical monitoring and wave-data analysis from a single system.
